OCRN – Online Moderation Best Practices Interview

May 29th, 2008 Posted in Building Community

I had the pleasure of interviewing two rock stars in the online moderation space on behalf of the OCRN. Joe Cothrel from Lithium and Jay Bryant from LiveWorld. Jay and Joe both share some fantastic Best Practices for online moderation.

Great interview Jake - some excellent points made here. It's so important to get the basics right and set the ground rules so that the moderators end up gently steering the ship and you get the community self-governing a large percentage of the content.
  • Great interviews, Jake, well conducted! I've been reading your blog for a short while, but I'm going to have to go back now and look at all the other interviews you have done.

What struck me again is how the perception of the moderation role needs to be shifted away from that of just policing users; the need for enforcement is really just a byproduct of the true goal of helping both members and the organization be successful on the forums, a theme I've heard echoed in your blog before. Great stuff!

I must admit, I was surprised to be reading your bog and suddenly see Joe's face pop-up at me! As a disclosure, I work at Lithium with Joe.

Joe Cothrel is the best in the business. Having worked with him, I can say that there's no one else I'd rather talk to when it comes to Best Practices!
  • I just want to make it clear that I am not Kosmo Kramer.:) But seriously, thanks for the good words, guys!
  • Cothrel was totally on point! Jay Bryant was good, too, but Cothrel's points were strong - and great. Nice interview.
