What is Web 2.0?

November 1st, 2005 Posted in Building Community, The Internet

You’ve likely heard the term Web 2.0 by now. If you’re not quite sure what it is, check out the "What is Web 2.0" by the guy who coined the term.

Like so many things – the best explainations are visual:

In our initial brainstorming, we formulated our sense of Web 2.0 by example:

Web 1.0   Web 2.0
DoubleClick –> Google AdSense
Ofoto –> Flickr
Akamai –> BitTorrent
mp3.com –> Napster
Britannica Online –> Wikipedia
personal websites –> blogging
evite –> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation –> search engine optimization
page views –> cost per click
screen scraping –> web services
publishing –> participation
content management systems –> wikis
directories (taxonomy) –> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness –> syndication

Hey Jason, great to hear from you!

Yeah, I wasn’t convinced that AJAX was really a “Web 2.0″ technology until I listened to a podcast the other day where one of the guys described Web 2.0 as idea that help convinence… social bookmarking helps to find the cool stuff faster, Flickr helps you share stuff faster, and AJAX makes the tech experience faster.
