Widget + Contest = Movie Promotion

December 15th, 2007 Posted in Business Strategy

The new movie Cloverfield (buildings falling in NYC, people running… am I the only one who is a bit bothered by this?) does a pretty cool promotion.

First they release an extended, 5 minute sneak peek video. As part of that video, cult icon J.J. Abrams lays out the contest – the person with the most traffic from the use of the widget you’re watching will get an early screening in their town. Pretty smart.

I’ll go beyond “pretty” and label it very smart. Instead of just making it easy to pass along the clip with a “Send to Friend” or some other tactic they’ve gone ahead and incentivized word of mouth. That, I think, creates an even stronger sense of people having a stake in the success of the movie.

If there’s one problem I have with this, it’s that there’s no way to just link to the preview. That takes email more or less out of the picture, which shouldn’t be overlooked in the age of social networks and embed codes and such. Just a thought.

I couldn’t even watch past the middle of this clip, and now I’m all weirded out. :(

The contest is a smart idea though. Likely we’ll be seeing more of this sort of thing as movie people smarten up to the facebook world.
