Truly living in the Age of the Internet

January 12th, 2009 Posted in The Internet

At the Golden Globes last night, the always spectacular Tina Fey (yes, I have a crush) called out internet forum commenters as part of her acceptance speech.

While this speech was (of course) fantastic, and the bit about the internet was classic, it makes me wonder: how can those of us who want to keep a positive internet overall can influence the experience to tone down some of the negativity that flies around with great abandon?

Certainly I don’t have the negative view of the internet culture overall that people like Andrew Keen have, but still.

Anyone have any great ideas?

Good comment - definitely too much rudeness online, not enough constructive debate.
  • CommunityGuy, you're not the only one with a crush on Tina. Woof!

Seriously, I suspect the only way to civilize the Internet is by setting a good example. Every time somebody gets hostile, we need to ignore them. We need to resist the urge to tell them off. They pull is into their world and take us away from ours. Support people who can exchange views and even criticisms with civility.

Over time, hostile people will drift more and more into the background.
  • I have a crush on Tina Fey too ; ) And I thought this was very funny!
