So true it’s scary

If Architects Had To Work Like Web Designers…

Dear Mr. Architect:

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion. My house should have somewhere between two and forty-five bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted. When you bring the blueprints to me, I will make the final decision of what I want. Also, bring me the cost breakdown for each configuration so that I can arbitrarily pick one.

It goes on. Too funny!

I recently came across this site that is a terrific look at the world of color. Sounds dull, but it’s really quite fun. Check it out.

Great Service

January 27th, 2005 | Comments | Posted in Business Strategy, Doing It Right

This morning, I pulled out my Bose noise canceling headphones, one of my most cherished possessions. When I turned the ear cup to put them on, the headband cracked. I use these headphones on every plane I go on nowdays and since I have another trip to Europe next week, I was horrified.

I called the Bose customer service immediately and the guy on the other end offered to do a warranty swap out immediately. I won’t have them in time for the trip next week, but as soon as I’m back, I’ll be getting them swapped out. I’m amazed at how good the experience was. For $300 headphones, that’s what you’d expect. From Bose, that’s what you’d expect. And that’s exactly what I got.

By the way, if you spend any time on a plane, these are beyond worth the money. Here’s a review.

Working with Communities

January 26th, 2005 | Comments | Posted in Tricks of the Trade

At the Blog Business Summit (that thing I so desperately wanted to be at) there seems to have been an interesting discussion about PR and the blogosphere.

Worth a read, but here’s a few of the points I wanted to highlight:

  • Rule #1: Tell the truth. Rule #2: Go public.

I’d go so far as to say this is the top 2 rules for any community development person. If you don’t get these two right, nothing else matters.

  • Build a great relationship network before you start blogging

The key here is “build a great relationship”… doesn’t matter what it is you’re talking about. The way companies communicate should be about creating a relationship. Not a CRM database on how many times people have purchased, but face-to-face (even if virtual), handshaking, ask people about their kids sorta relationships.

  •  Don?t ignore the elephant in the room. Talk about the hard topics

More specifically, I’d say “Talk about the topics your community is interested in talking about, not what you feel is important, regardless of how difficult or uncomfortable that is for you.

  •  Foster relationships with connectors?because they?ll tell you about hot issues as they break

Well said. Not just will connectors tell you about issues, they’ll be your advocates in the community, they’ll bring you ideas and feedback, and more.

Blogging a Book

January 25th, 2005 | Comments | Posted in Blogging/Podcasting

For the last few years, I’ve been thinking about writing a book about the techniques and tips on being a Community Manager/Liaison.

I’ve finally stepped off the edge of the cliff and am starting to make notes.

In requisite community spirit, I’m going to be posting my notes here. My hope is to not only provide a method of starting to pull my thoughts together, but also to get your feedback, your questions, your input on those notes.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have!

Green, the new black.

I’m beyond jealouse of all the folks who are currently attending the  Blog Business Summit. I really really wish I could have afforded to be there. Seems like every blogger I follow and talk to is out there meeting each other and telling me how they know me.

Jealousy. Thy name is Jake.

Amazon’s Customer Images

January 12th, 2005 | Comments | Posted in Building Community

I just noticed a new (?) feature on Amazon: Customer Images. Looks like Amazon is tapping into their customer base, their…..community… to help them fill out their product image gallery. A great example of not having to pay people to do work WITH you. As a wise man (and former boss) used to say often and loudly: It’s not about marketing TO consumers, it’s about marketing WITH consumers.

What are customer images?

Your pictures of products in action, with captions – photos of product features (’see the simple controls on this music player’), products in use (’here’s how to install the ink cartridge’), product performance (’this camera’s macro mode is incredibly sharp’) – anything you can imagine to help other shoppers learn about the product!

Why share images?

Sometimes product descriptions and manufacturer supplied images are not enough. Here’s your chance to help millions of fellow customers learn more about how a product looks, behaves and performs. Think of customer uploaded image as reviews in pictures.
