How to pitch me

As a blogger who gets a fair amount of traffic, I get a pretty regular stream of pitches for various books, web apps, business tools, events, and other assorted items. I’m continually surprised how bad most of these pitches are, so on advice of some industry friends I’ve put together this page to help you out!

If you’re interested in pitching me, here’s the best way to get me to pay attention:

  • Don’t send me a form letter - generate an email that you’re actually writing to me because you’re interested in me. Sending me the same generic mail you sent to 154 other people is a sure way to have me hit the “delete” button.
  • Figure out who I am and what I’m interested in – there’s a whole blog of content here, and a full blown bio page. Just a hint, crooked penises are not an interesting community topic and I’m not interested in the issue personally.
  • Send me the goods – I love reviewing new products, books, and anything else that might be new. My wife calls me a “new product whore” (don’t worry, it’s a term of endearment). But if you want me to review your book, you need to send it to me, not digital samples. If you have a physical product, I’ll happily send you my mailing address. If you have a Web service, be ready to hand me a test account. Simply put, I don’t review things I can’t experience.
  • Tell me who you are – I like to work with people I know, so make your pitch personal. I want to know how you’re trying to change the world, not just how you’re trying to make money.

Now that you’re armed with the intel, pitch away!
