Sorry for the drool

January 9th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Holy lord…. where can I buy one?? Seriously. Today.

UPDATE: Official info from Apple on the iPhone. Is there anything this phone can’t do??

Personally, I’ll wait for 3G data and more info about how my contacts, calendar, and email can sync over the air. That’s what ties me to my Windows smartphone now.

UPDATE II: Apple has posted a stream of the Steve Jobs keynote.

UPDATE III: Kottke has posted pics of a scale model iPhone so you can judge scale. OK, so it’s not as huge as I was worried about. Great news. Check that off the list of potential concerns. Now the next big questions: what’s the battery time like? After a few months of putting it next to your head and jabbing your grungy fingers all over it how nasty does it get? When will we see an upgrade to 3G data services?

Update IV: Cringley takes a stab at why Apple would hobble the internet connection to dial-up like speeds. His take is that it’s basically that since CIngular Video runs via RealVideo, and Apple wants Quicktime usage, especially as it relates to the iTunes store, they hobbled. He also thinks it would require pressure on Cingular to change, but that once Cingular made the decision the change would be as simple as a firmware or software update. Here’s the contact info for Cingular. Drop them a note!!

My wife suckered me into watching Beauty and the Geek tonight… a train wreck of a reality show. Turns out, it was actually pretty decent… in a reality show sorta way. Add that to the list of things I can’t believe I’m blogging outloud.

Incredible Song

December 31st, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

A little late for Christmas, but still worth sharing.

The music was originally broadcast on Studio 60 put together by the folks at the Tipitina’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping artists recover from Hurricane Katrina.  Last year they raised $500,000 for new instruments alone. If you’re feeling generous, you can donate to the worthy cause.

Download the MP3 of this song at the NBC Studio 60 site. Great job NBC for offering that download.

(Thanks to Chris for loaning me the player above)

Best "Out of Office" ever

December 29th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

My buddy Andy from WOMMA has perhaps the best “Out of Office” message ever.

I will be out of the office at WOMMA’s Word of Mouth Marketing Summit and Research Symposium until Thursday. I will have limited access to email.

1. Reporters and emergencies: Please call my cell at xxx-xxx-xxxx.
2. Wife and parents: You may also call my cell.
3. Charlie (my 3-year-old): No, you cannot pee in the sink. Yes, a dinosaur could eat a monkey.
4. Telemarketers: Please take me off your list.
5. Spammers: Please call my stock broker.

So much fun, and actually gives you a glance at Andy’s personality. Very smart.

Adobe fails the customer service test. Miserably.

December 18th, 2006 | 8 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Wow.

That’s the only word I can use to describe the Adobe customer service experience I just had. And not in a good way. So here’s the recap:

I use an Intel-based MacBook Pro for work. I need to buy Photoshop CS2 to do some of my graphics tasks. I’ve hesitated to spend $700+ dollars on CS2, since it doesnt have Universal support (i.e. optimized for the Intel chips). Adobe has just posted the CS3 beta, which has Universal support, which requires a CS2 serial number to use. Fair enough, I can live with the serial number limitation.

But I didn’t want to spend $700+ on CS2, only to have to spend another $700+ when CS3 launches in "Spring 2007" (according the Adobe Web site). After spending 20 minutes digging around the Adobe Web site to find info on the licensing issues, I gave up and called the 800 number.

The phone system gave me four options, one of which was general customer service. I chose this option and was immediately given hold music. No message that I was being transferred, no notification of hold time, nothing. After waiting 40 minutes, I hung up. I called back and this time selected product sales. My hold time? 1 minute. Priorities are clear, no?

I was asked for my name (clearly in preparation for kicking off an ordering process I wasn’t ready to start), and instead responded "Actually, I just have a quick licensing question". I posed my question and was told that there would be a $169 upgrade fee when CS3 came out. I asked if I could avoid this extra upgrade fee if I waited a bit longer, thus closer to the launch of CS3. She said no, because they didn’t know when the product would launch. I made a comment about it being listed on the site as "Spring 2007", so perhaps I should wait until early 2007?

This is when things really went off the rails.

The rep, a female named Tony/Toni got really irritated. She said she wouldn’t leak information and potentially lose her job. (To be clear, I made no request, overt or covert, for her to leak anything) I told her I was just referring to information listed on Adobe.com. Almost as though she’d never heard me say this, she launched into a fairly harsh response, explaining that the standard product cycle for Creative Studio is 1 – 1.5 years. This therefore means  CS3 is at least a year away from launch, and how nothing formal had been announced about CS3. (Jake’s note: Other than the ability to download the CS3 beta currently on Adobe.com)

From here the conversation fell apart quickly, reaching a point where I asked: "I’m sorry but I have upset you in some way?". She responded that she was simply upset she couldn’t answer my questions to my satisfaction and how she didn’t even know who she was talking to (remember – I skipped over the formal information collecting stage). Both of these points were made in the same overly irritated tone that she had now adopted.

Quite honestly, this is exactly what I expected from Adobe. This is exactly the experience I’ve had with Adobe for years. This type of behavior towards consumers is exactly what I had feared when Adobe bought Macromedia. I hear from my former Macromedia, now Adobe employee friends that Adobe has made a real effort to keep the amazing consumer focus that Macromedia was always able to pull off. I don’t see it, at least not in the customer service department.

Boy, I’m really excited now to spend nearly a $1000 ($700+$169+taxes and shipping) on a single piece of software. Would someone be willing to kick me in the head while enter my credit card number on amazon in order to complete the overall experience?

Tag! I'm it.

December 15th, 2006 | 6 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Teresa has tagged me with the latest blog meme: 5 things you don’t know about me.

  1. I have a terrible habit of buying books I want/intend to read, yet know full well don’t have time to read. I have a huge stack on my nightstand waiting to be read. (Apparently I’m not alone)
  2. As a former design school student, I find that my favorite content on flickr.com is the nude/semi-nude photos. There are some amazing artist photographers! But I feel a little weird about adding any of these great photos as favs since favs are public.
  3. Without question, my favorite European trip to date was to Berlin.
  4. I’m working on becoming a better photographer. I have always loved photography, and have a pretty good eye… but don’t understand the technical details even a little. I’m taking my first 1 on 1 lesson in two days.
  5. I’m a whore for new products. I love trying new things from food to gadgets, I love to be the first on my block to say "yes, I have tried the pickle flavored ice cream, and here’s my review…." It’s unhealthy, I know.

And of course, it’s time for me to pass it on. I’ll tag the following fine folks:

UPDATE: Connie has tagged me again, so in the spirit of the meme, I’m playing again.

  1. I love anything "fruit". Raw fruit, fruity drinks, fruit flavors, you name it. Fruit anything.
  2. I’ve grown to loath eating in restaurants. After as much as I travel, by the time I get home I can’t stomach the idea of going out again.
  3. I have a flying quirk where I always have to have an aisle seat and preferably in 11B (at least on American). Makes me feel better, don’t ask why.
  4. When I was 7 or 8, I got bit by a Great Dane on the inside of the thigh. Big chunk. We lived in the country, about 30 minutes from a hospital. The most vivid part of the memories of that day are two things. First, the hospital staff cut off my shorts to get to the wound, which was particularly happy since I hated those damn things. Secondly, my dad ran several red lights. Even in extreme pain, I remember thinking he was the coolest guy on the planet. (And still do for that matter)
  5. My perfect vacation consists of a beach, a stack of reading material, regular swims in warm water, and absolutely no schedule. To hell with this whole scheduled vacation foolishness!

New phone: Samsung Blackjack

December 10th, 2006 | 7 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Last week I finally got fed up with my old cell phone (an Audiovox Smartphone). Don’t get me wrong, the phone was great, but it was 2.5 years old and had thousands of miles on it. I had literally used it until it was falling apart.

So after much research, I went to my neighborhood Cingular store and picked up a fantastic new phone: the Samsung Blackjack. This is a windows smartphone, using a newer (and better) version of Windows Mobile, and has a qwerty keyboard. I’m so impressed with the capabilities of the phone, I threw together a wiki to help share tips and tricks. Check it out.

Overall, I’m really really impressed with this phone. A quick review…

Pros:

  • Super thin form factor
  • Small, yet comfortable thumb keyboard
  • Clear (if not thin) sound
  • Beautiful screen
  • Ultra-fast internet connection
  • Cingular TV downloads fun video clips download very fast (unfortuantely they have to be played through the horrid Windows Media Player)
  • Unlike my old smartphone, I can setup multiple POP email accounts so I can check all my personal email accounts.

Cons:

  • Super short battery life
  • Jog dial is not tall enough to be easy enough to use
  • Unlock procedure (for the keyboard locking) isn’t easy enough to do one handed
  • Details about how data plan works is ….difficult to understand (even the Cingular reps don’t understand it)
  • Windows Media Player is a piece of garbage
  • No accessory to connect proprietary data port/headphone port into standard headphone jack (Hopefully this changes. Fast.)

Overall, very strong recommendation. More review info soon!

What a day…

November 20th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

After a long (but not horribly long) night and a long day here at Casa Del Hospital, I’m finally taking a bit of down time to catch up on work and blogging. Bridget and I have stepped into the waiting room to get a better Wi-Fi signal and to give mom some incredibly much needed rest. Poor girl passed exhaustion about 5 hours ago, but kept on truckin. She’s loopy now! So me and my girl are just hanging out. Well, actually I’m playing on the laptop and she’s sleeping away. I have a feeling that it’ll take 4 hours to write this short entry, since I have to pause to hold her every so often.

I don’t mean to turn this site into a daddyblog, so don’t worry!

If you’re interested in photos, add me as a friend on Flickr.com – My ID is sink21.
